Ballarat Art Gallery is amazing. Not only is it a fabulous gallery, but often has excellent exhibitions, the latest of which is the Australian Masterpieces Exhibition.
It’s come from the Art Gallery of NSW and Ballarat is its only Victorian venue. On display was a mixture of many 20th century artists including Margaret Olley, Grace Cossington Smith (good to see some Australian women artists represented), Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, John Brack, Jeffrey Smart and Brett Whitely.
Fred Williams also has some lovley pieces but I think the outstanding one for me was Brett Whiteley’s ‘The Green Mountain’, painted in his usual sensual style and strikingly green. I love his work.
So it was well worth the trip to Ballarat, even though it was freezing there!
