The Melbourne Age ran a really interesting article titled ‘Establishing art bazaars is fair game’, looking at the growing array of art fairs around the world, especially in the Asia Pacific Region. It seems to be the future trend for selling art – the recent ART Hong Kong fair achieved sales of $100-$200 million which is pretty impressive by any standard. The cost of participating is certainly not insignificant. Total costs including staffing, freight, travel etc can top $50,ooo apparently. Possibly beyond the reach of many galleries and artists. It will be interesting to see what happens in Australia when, from 2013, we will have alternating art fairs between Melbourne and Sydney.
