A visit to the biennial Melbourne Art Fair last weekend confirmed my thoughts that art fairs are alive and well in these tough times. The event (which was not inexpensive to get into so no riff raff) attracted 27,000 visitors and sales of $8 million (although this was down from $11 million in 2010) – so not a bad result for a three day event. The spacious stands exuded an ‘expensive gallery’ feel and many of the works were up around the $100,000 mark. However, it all looked fantastic and the Melbourne Exhibition Building was at its best. It’s such a stunning building.
